July Patriotic Meeting and Quilt Sharing

Our July meeting featured beautiful patriotic decorations, and we celebrated our freedom by saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing “God Bless America.” What a great time to also share the work of our hands with the community. We bring delicious food, and our visitors especially enjoy these luncheon meetings in July and December.

We shared 116 quilts among these agencies: Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention, Veterans Home in Collins, South Mississippi Children’s Center, Forrest General Hospital, Wesley Medical Center, Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, and the Hattiesburg Fire Department, with each agency receiving from 13 to 25 quilts.

We had our annual Parade of Children’s Quilts and voted on our favorites. Sixteen members brought in new quilts to add to the donations, and first, second, and third place winners were Dianne McLendon, Sally Henderson, and Betty Allen.

Some of the members who had made barn quilt signs brought their finished blocks in for us to see. We were impressed with the work created by these members and hope to see the other signs.

Charitable activities: In addition to the quilts we placed today, we received 71 pillows, six preemie blankets, 18 walker totes, and 15 catheter bag covers.

Ellen Hall, quilt show registrar, received several entries today, the last day to hand these in at a meeting. Mail-in deadline is August 5. See Quilt Show tab for instructions and entry forms.

Hulda Ingram announced that The Stitchin’ Post will have Christmas in July on Saturday, July 26, with demos and a big sale.

Visitors Center Display: Betty and Joe Bingham have agreed to handle the VC displays, taking over this responsibility from Mary Nell Magee. If you would like your quilts displayed for a month, contact them and they will schedule you. They will receive quilts at our 3rd Wednesday meetings and hang them by the end of the week. The new quilts on display for July-August are by Betty and Joe.
