May 2015

We met on a beautiful spring day May 13. President Susie Jackson thanked Pat Routon’s group for ample refreshments in spite of the fact that many on this group were unable to come. We will miss Lois Livingston, who passed away April 29. Even though well up in years, she was an active member of the Children’s Quilts group, taking home fabric and bringing back quilt tops every meeting. Condolences were expressed to Janeil Harris on the loss of her father. Many of our members have health concerns or surgery–Kathy Houseal, Shirley Glaab, Otha Mae Edwards, and Peggy Gable; we wish them well.

Linda Flanders and Susie Jackson have designed our raffle quilt–a setting of 16 Dresden Plate blocks with four large corners of outstanding appliqué. Four people are preparing the corners, and members took packets to make the Dresden Plate blocks. Linda showed a video she had prepared with instructions on construction. We are really benefiting from our camera and projector purchases, though still getting familiar with this high-tech equipment.

The program was by Martha Ginn, who showed a PowerPoint presentation of Pathways– which described Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry’s Applipiecing® technique. This technique facilitates the joining of sections which would be difficult to piece in the traditional way. It also allows us to draw our own designs to make our quilt unique, using “pathways” of Flying Geese, Piano Keys, Blocks, Spikes, and solid fabrics. Martha showed several quilts she has made after learning this technique. She will teach a Pathways Workshop on May 27. Supply lists were given with sign-up.

Dianne McLendon, our Shapely Challenge chair, gave us instructions for Step 2–Squares and Half-Square Triangles. We are to create four different 12” blocks incorporating these two shapes. Fuller instructions and examples of 2” grid, 3” grid, and 4” grid blocks are on the Shapely Challenge 2015-16 tab under Guild Activities on the website. If you have any questions, contact Dianne (see your member directory).

Susie announced that Martha Ginn had agreed to be Show Chair for the 2016 show, with the theme being “Dresden Plates Now and Then.” Martha asked members to join in the anticipation and excitement of our show and to tell her how they preferred to take part. We have held 15 highly successful shows and learned a lot about how to do them, and if we tap our known resources and draw in our new talent, we should have another show to be proud of.

Betty Moore invited members to come and work with Children’s Quilts on the first Tuesday of each month. Check the Children’s Quilt tab under Guild Activities on the website to see what a great learning and fellowship opportunity this is!

Snippets: Missy Lee showed us a new ruler which is especially useful for preparing half-square triangles. It is called Bloc_Loc and has a groove on the diagonal where the seam allowance can fit into, allowing no slipping or rocking while squaring up. You can read more about these rulers on their website:

Capture Bloc-LocLeslie Kiger, our award-winning member who moved to St. Simons Island, GA, will be back to present our June 10 program, “What It Takes to Win,” followed by a workshop the following day (Thursday, June 11) on the Eldon block by Laundry Basket Quilts. Preregistration is necessary because Leslie will need to bring patterns for this class. The class fee is $15.00 plus $11.00 for the pattern. If you did not sign up at the meeting, contact Susie Jackson (see membership directory).
